The story
Artasce Creative has been building on the web since 1999. What follows is the plain version — no arc, no lessons, just what happened and when.
1999
A travelling salesman learned HTML. Not a computer science route, not a degree, not a plan — a side interest that took over.
It was the part of the week he looked forward to. That turned out to matter more than where it came from.
Then
A work connection moved him to Utah and into a marketing company. They already had a coder. The sites were ugly.
He had a degree in architecture and an artist's eye, so he taught himself design to fix that — and then taught himself PHP, because the design kept running into what the code could not do.
June 2000
The business licence was filed in June 2000. The name on it was Turbo Gold.
It is the same licence lineage that is still trading today. Everything after this is a rename, not a restart.
The first sale
The first website sold for $100, to a man who resold event tickets.
It is a small number and it is not the embarrassing part of the story. It is the part where the thing became a business.
The problem
Turbo Gold did not survive a chamber-of-commerce evening where someone asked whether he was selling vitamins.
A name that has to be explained in a room full of prospects is not a name. It was time for a different one.
2006
Art plus ascend, with the ending dropped. Artasce.
The name came out of a line about working with your hands and your heart, attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. The exact wording is not verified here, so it is not quoted — only where it came from.
Now
Still building. Same licence lineage, trading as Artasce Creative.
The studio now builds for the AI-first era — and builds with it. The work is designed, built, reviewed and shipped by a system the studio runs, with a human eye on every outcome. Clients are not sold that as a novelty. They are handed the result of it.
The name
Art. Ascend. Drop the ending.
Art
The eye that came from architecture, and from painting before that.
Ascend
Where the work is meant to go, and the direction it is supposed to take a client.
Artasce
The two of them run together, with the tail cut off. Adopted in 2006.
The idea came from a line about working with your hands and your heart, attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. It is not quoted here — the exact wording has never been checked, and a name does not need a quotation to be honest about where it came from.
What has not changed
Three things, since the beginning.
Design was learned to fix something specific: work that functioned and looked bad. That order — problem, then craft — never changed.
PHP was picked up because the design kept hitting a wall. Every technical skill in the studio arrived the same way, in service of an outcome somebody could see.
Turbo Gold in 2000, Artasce from 2006. The business behind them has never been re-founded, sold, or restarted.
